Internet dating is increasingly popular. US matchmaking service has been ordered to pay financial damages for introducing a Ukrainian woman to a future husband whom she says beat her. A federal jury in Baltimore awarded Nataliya Fox more than $430,000 (?233,695) after
she sued Encounters International (EI) for negligence.

EI specialises in matchmaking women from the former Soviet Union with North American
men online. The firm denied any wrongdoing and its lawyers said it would appeal.
Watershed case?

The case is thought to be the first of its kind against an introduction service. Mrs
Fox argued that EI failed to carry out sufficient background checks on her future
husband.

Women's rights groups have hailed the damages award as a breakthrough for immigrant
women.

"We know that the international matchmaking agencies are not taking any kind of care,"
the Baltimore Sun newspaper quoted Lesley Orloff of campaign group Legal Momentum as
saying.

Nataliya and James Fox married in 1998 after meeting online through EI.

Mrs Fox told the court she had endured an abusive relationship and sought hospital
treatment after Mr Fox beat her whilst she was breastfeeding their child.

Hospital staff testified that she had suffered bruises and broken chest bones in July
2002.

'Unjustified'

EI's founder Natasha Spivack told the court she had introduced two adults and was not
responsible for the conduct of their relationship, the Associated Press reported.

"She's extremely disappointed at the result. She doesn't believe it was justified,"
said the firm's lawyer, Paul Zukerberg.

According to the firm's website, it has facilitated 257 marriages which have produced
103 children since it was founded in 1993.

Its website says the women it profiles "have a different outlook" on marriage to US
women, being "less materialistic" and "more family oriented".

"As wives, they desire to build a loving home, follow their husband's lead and stick
with the marriage, even when times get tough and stop being 'fun'.", it explains.

Mr Fox denied beating his ex-wife. He was not a defendant because of an earlier
$115,000 settlement with her, AP reported.

Stop breeding Russian scammers!

To start off I want to tell you a little about myself. My name is David Timmerman I am an American and I own a web design company called Web Setters. I have corresponded with several Russian women in the last few years. The first one was a doctor in Moscow. After about six months of correspondence she attempted to get a visa to America because I was so busy getting my company going, there was no way that I could have come to Moscow for another six months. She gave up after finding out how hard it would be to get the visa and stopped correspondence. No money was ever asked for.

The next girl that I started writing lived in Tashkent. After about four months of correspondence I decided I wanted to go visit her and try to get her in to come back with me. As I was waiting on my paperwork she told her x-husband that she was going to America with their son and he took legal action to stop her. She then was faced with a choice, her son or me. I don't have to tell you what the choice was.

After she told me that she could never leave her son I put
an ad on a site where Russian women browse American men that would like a Russian wife. The first response I got from the ad was a
woman (maybe) who lived in Kiev. Each letter accompanied a picture of a beautiful
woman. There were two red flags that went off. The first all the pictures file names we names like: 76.jpg, 21.jpg. 15.jpg. That is a major red flag because names like that are what I use in designing a site like that are part of a library. A real girl will send pictures with names like: thepark.jpg, vacation.jpg, kitchen.jpg. The other red flag was she never really wrote her letters like she was writing to me. I would tell her about what is happening in my life and her reply would almost never address anything in my letter. All she would talk about is how important it is that we get together. Now comes the acid test.

After about a month of letters I had a business trip to Myrtle Beach. The business could be done in one day but it is business and Myrtle Beach so everything is a tax deduction. I planed the trip for 4 days. That way I would have one day of business and 3 days of the beach. When I got to town my truck was running on empty so I stopped at a convenience store to gas up. At the checkout I met a girl from Russia and she spent most of the 4 days with me. She told me that she was on a summer tour of the US with a group. I asked how hard it was to get a visa and she told me that she applied with 10 of her friends and she was the only one that was accepted. Guys, remember that when your girl tells you she can get a visitation visa. This was a great chance to learn about each other's culture. She told me that she learned a lot more about America hanging out with a real American that she could have with the tour group and I also enjoyed her telling me about Russia.

After I got back I wrote my girl in Kiev about my trip and told her about the girl from Russia. There was no reaction at all like she didn't care. Now I knew the she was a scammer and she just hasn't got around asking for money yet. Then she wrote that an agency could get her a passport and visa and all I had to do it tell her where to come. She still didn't ask for money so I wrote back and told her where to come. I knew that they couldn't get her a ticket here and she would have to fly to Atlanta but she wrote back telling me that she could fly here and she needed $1000 for the trip. After that I wrote her back and told her that $1000 wasn't in the budget at this time and I would have told her earlier if she asked. She wrote back telling me that she was going on vacation and that was the last I heard. I later found that the pictured she sent me were of a model in Moscow named Inna Gomez.

After that I had two other scammers contact me, one is on the black list.

I am now corresponding with a girl in Gomel and I am sure she it for real.

I wrote all this so you will get to know me and understand my background in Russian scams.

I want to start of reminding you that men in America get scammed by women here all the time. My best friend is a lawyer and he tells me about cases where men sent money to women under false pretenses. He even had a case where a
woman was scammed by women. It's because American men have the idea they can buy a woman and American women will let you try. I proved it myself. I put
an ad on a dating site with pictures of a beautiful woman and to date I have had 39 men write me back wanting me to come visit them as well as 9 marriage proposals including one from a US Senator (I will never kiss and tell). The point is I could easily write any one of these men with a story about how I would love to come see them but I don't have any money for a plane ticket and they would wire me anything I ask for. It would be like shooting ducks in a barrel. Even if they find the truth out no law was broken because they sent me the money of their own free will. American women have done this for years and now Russian women are learning what pushovers we are. My feelings about this is if you are dumb enough to send money to someone you met on the Internet because of some BS story it's like the old Toyota ads say: "You Asked For It - - - You Got It".
The bad thing is you are screwing up a beautiful thing.

The reason for searching for a wife in Russia is because women in Russia are more interested in your warm heart and great personality, not your money. They are not looking for a meat ticket like American women and sending them money is changing that.

Most Americans think about buying everything including friendship, loyalty, trust, and love. All you need to do is take a good look at how American men act. They spend a lot
of money on what they call power cars. They spend a lot of money on clothing. There are places where you may spend $50 on a meal where they will take their dates. I have know men that live in a shack where the roof is about to fall down so they can afford to make that monthly payment on their Vet or Trans Am. I also have known men to carry a large bankroll of about $500 or $600 to flash around. This whole thing is about impressing women.

By doing these things we have created our own flock of scammers right here in America. Many American men (including myself) will complain that women have heads like cash registers but they never think that we are the ones that created this.

Now that the "Cold War" has come to and end and we are learning that Russian people (especially women) are nothing like we were lead to believe we are finding out that the unspoiled Russian women
are like a breath of fresh air next the money hungry American women that we have created. Well guess what, we are now doing this to the Russian women. Take a look at the men that are bragging about all they have. I had one man want to send a girl a picture of his sailboat rather that a picture of himself. He said: "I got to show her what I have". These girls are learning fast and now we have more and more that are only looking for money. I am writing this because this American men and Russian women is a great idea but
we need to show the Russian women what great men we are. Not
what we have. If a man is looking for a wife in Russia we must do the following:

Start off being honest with both the girls and ourselves about why you want a Russian bride. If you want a woman that will be impressed with you because you have money, nice cars, a big home,
etc. - don't waste your time and money on a Russian bride. Stick to American women because the only woman that you will impress will think like the women here. I have never been one to go for using things like money to impress woman. I have never felt like I needed to because I am a nice guy. I am the type that will help my wife with the homework or do nice things for her. In my marriage I never cheated on my wife. The problem with that is American women have been trained to think that men are there to use so they will use a man like that.
Russian women have not been trained to think that way so they will not use you. They will be happy to find a man that appreciates them and helps them around the house.

A short while ago I found the black list of "Russian women". No need saying that scammers can reach pretty much anybody, who is looking for a life partner online. However I noticed (after reading the letters shown in the list) that there are certain things, you can notice before the scammer reaches your bank account.

Why do I write this?

Because I am also one of you (more or less), somebody who is looking for a life partner and decided to give it a try online.

I am a Russian woman of 23 y.o. and I think, I know what a woman is looking for online if she is not a scammer.

So, here are my tips, I hope, they can help somebody to avoid a problem:

1. Do you need to be careful? Yes, you do, however you should not go too far with that. If you have a profile without a pic on some site and hardly ever get any replies from ladies and then have bunches of love letters from some kind of a Russian beauty, ask yourself: what is there that could make her fall in love that quickly? Would you be able to fall in love with the profile you made that quick?

2. Pics. Russian girls have less technical possibilities than those, who live next door to you. Bunches of professional pics is a reason to think twice before getting close to that person. If she is a simple teacher with a minimal income and meanwhile she sends you something, that looks good enough to be published on the cover of the magazine, ask yourself where these pics come from. A lot of the pics that I have seen here were "too good to be true" Style, light, make up, quality- those things can mean that the pics were taken from a model agency and have nothing to do with the person, who writes to you.

3. What kind of pics should they be? usual. maybe made by a professional photographer, but not top-model like. To be sure you can ask her to send you later on a specific pic (not in your first letter of course). She says, she lives in Moscow? Ask her for a pic, made next to the Kremlin/ with her kid/in her garden/next to her office (according to the info that you have). If you are polite and ask nicely, showing interest to her and her life, "normal" woman will make it and send it to you.

4. You can ask later on for the pics she sent you before. You can say, you lost them and would like to have them again. If she uses pics of other people and sends bunches of letters to different guys, she may get confused and send you pics of a different person.

5. Letters. This is the first thing that can make you recognize a scammer. First letters can be neutral, but the further it goes the more specific the letters become. If your name is still mentioned only in the headline and never shows in the letter after that, it is a reason to think that the letters are made for mass use and are sent to a lot of people.

6. To move to a different country is a big step, if she never asks you about your life, work, family (not in general words (how are you today?), but specifically (how was your weekend in New Jersey?) it is strange that she wants to come to visit you next Thursday. If she is interested in you, she will ask you questions about your life, ideas, news, lifestyle BEFORE she decides to visit you.

7. You write to each other, so her letters cannot be a separate thing from what you write to her. If you say that your aunt died/ your son went to school/you got a promotion and she says, that the weather is still fine, it is a reason to have doubts about the letters.

8. If you keep in touch for a while (a few months), she shows deep interest and she is ready to share her life with you, her profile will probably get removed from the dating site, where you found her. If you are both ready to get married, why is she still looking for guys online?

9. If everything seems to be ok, but you still have doubts, you can send a reply to her profile as a different user from a different email address and see what you get as a reply. Once again, the first letter you get then may be the same as the one she sent to you first (a lot of people have a pre-made letter for getting in touch with other people), but the other letters have to be different.

10. if she is planning to come to you and loves you like crazy ask her as a different user if she already found anybody online. If she is a scammer, the reply will always be no.

There are other things that can make you doubt. However these tips may help somebody :)

Dating Scam Alert from the United States Embassy in Moscow

The growing popularity of Internet romance has led to the growth of fraudulent online activity directed at Americans. The United States Embassy in Moscow is receiving increasing numbers of complaints from American citizens who have been lured into online relationships via false internet profiles.

Often, these are men pretending to be women who make contact with Americans usually men over the Internet through dating websites or chat rooms. The fictitious person then seeks to create a virtual relationship through the exchange of photos and e-mails. At some point s/he begins to ask for money, frequently asking that it be transferred through wire services. S/he commonly states that the money is needed to help resolve a family tragedy or arrange for a trip to the United States. A copy of a fraudulent U.S. visa is sometimes attached to prove good intentions. The U.S. Embassy in Moscow urges Americans to exercise caution many U.S. citizens have lost hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars.

There are common factors in these Internet scams. Scammers usually misinform the Americans about travel expenses and/or they inflate the cost of the expenses that do exist. They lure the American in with e-mails, pictures, phone calls, fake visas, and even e-mails from fake travel agencies in an attempt to prove their good intentions. Typically, something happens and they "can't leave the country." They either "are hospitalized for an injury" and a "member of the family" contacts the American citizen requesting money, or a "member of the family" needs an emergency operation and needs money. Sometimes they are stuck at the airport and are not allowed to board until they can show they have a certain amount of dollars to cover their expenses while in the U.S. Some claim to have been robbed of the money that was sent or claim that they are detained at the airport. Again, their purpose is not to immigrate to the U.S., but to get as much money as possible from the victim. Most of these scammers are actually men who are paying women a minimal fee to sit and pose for pictures and pick up the money at an office of a money transfer agency.

Please keep in mind that, while the U.S. Embassy in Moscow does not have the authorization to initiate investigations of these scams, the Fraud Prevention Unit can verify the authenticity of any U.S. visa via e-mail at FPMM@state.gov.

1. I’ve heard a lot about Internet dating scams involving Russian women. I would like to know whether the woman I have met is for real, but all I have is her name and photo. Is this enough to find out if she exists?

Unfortunately, the U.S. Embassy cannot verify the identity of Russian women. Russia has strict laws protecting the distribution of information about Russian citizens. The embassy has information on foreign citizens only if a person has actually applied for services from the U.S. government.

2. Can you tell me whether this visa is genuine or if this woman has applied for a visa?

3. I’ve heard there are blacklists of women who are known Internet dating scammers. Does the U.S. Embassy have a blacklist? Where do I find a blacklist?

Although the U.S. Embassy does not maintain such a list, there are many Internet “blacklist” websites, where victims of scams have placed information and identities of people who have defrauded them. It may be helpful to perform an Internet search for such sites.

4. I think I have been scammed. I have sent this woman $2,000.00 and now I find out her visa is a fake. How do I get my money back?

We regret that the U.S. Embassy has no way of obtaining your money for you. We suggest contacting the money transfer agency or your credit card company to ascertain their policies in such cases.

5. I want to lodge a complaint with the Russian government and the U.S. authorities about being scammed. Can the U.S. Embassy help me? Who do I contact?

Because the U.S. Embassy is a diplomatic mission and not a law enforcement agency, you will need to go through the appropriate law enforcement channels, should you believe you are a victim of fraud. You may contact law enforcement authorities in your area. You may also visit the Internet Fraud Complaint Center hosted by the FBI at http://www.ifccfbi.gov/ in order to file a complaint. 6. My Russian girlfriend wants to come visit me but says that she must purchase insurance and have $300.00 in cash to show she can afford to travel. How much money are Russians required to show?

To receive a U.S. non-immigrant visa, applicants are not required to show cash or proof of insurance for travel. For more information on the visa application process and requirements, please visit our website.

7. The woman I’m writing to says that she needs $1,000.00 to show for "pocket" money” or the airline won’t let her board the plane. Is this true?

There are no Russian or American customs or airline regulations requiring travelers show proof of income or “pocket money” to travel to the United States.

8. I would like to bring my Russian girlfriend to the United States to visit and she says I must wire her the money for a ticket. I don’t want to send it directly to her. If I send the money to the Embassy, can you buy the ticket for her? Can you recommend a travel agency I can send the money and have them buy the ticket?

The embassy cannot suggest or verify the validity of private companies or organizations within Russia, nor can the embassy purchase tickets. Tickets can easily be purchased in the United States directly from the air carriers for Russian citizens. In addition, applicants are NOT required to have a ticket prior to the visa interview. In fact, applicants are counseled NOT to by tickets or make arrangements until they have the visa in hand. Scammers will cite fictitious American or Russian regulations requiring that the tickets be purchased in Russia with cash in order to get the cash sent overseas.

9. My girlfriend says that she must go to a tour agency and pay $500 for her visa application and visa, and it will take 2 months. Is this right? What is the procedure for Russians to get a tourist visa?

All visa applications are submitted to a Russian courier service – Pony Express – for delivery to the Embassy. The U.S. government charges a processing fee of $100 for each application. The courier service charges a delivery/handling fee. However, there are no additional fees, nor any requirements to show traveling money. Once an applicant submits their application, they are immediately scheduled for an appointment to appear for an interview within the following 10 days (or within 21 days during peak travel seasons). If the decision is positive, the visa is sent to the applicant within 72 hours through Pony Express.

Lets sort it out. There are a lot of scammers on the net. What is the solution? Actually you may relax and start search somewhere nearer to your house. No need to worry or doubt or being anxious.

Ok, then this article is not exactly of your highest interest.

Whether you finally decide to become online dating agency member and start search somewhere on the other side of the world. Lucky you are! Courage and patience be your guides?

- Don't expect anything from your partner and don't try to frame her into a certain dream standards. Believe me that the real person you are going to meet at the destination airport is much more interesting than ever of your dreams.

- Be enthusiastic and extraordinary

- Don't mix up true interest of a potential partner with the so-called "material benefits" - flowers, sweets, gifts. Inspire her with your personality, views, ideas. Don't try to impress her and look better making her blind with the gifts. This could cause a great disappointment and lost of hope, nothing to say about expenses. Surely, flowers are good for special events and occasions nothing to say that meanness is the worst men's quality after the cowardice and stupidity.

- Doubt her, starting point is that you don't know her and her expectations. She may force herself but life brings everything to initial places. Unless you want to discover true disappointment in her eyes when she meet you personally.

- Be careful with her feeling though don't forget yours. Suspect her, but do that secretly - don't show that you are jealous or suspicious. Give her time to show up. You'll see what she wants and expects.

Ekaterinburg Russian scammers

Ekaterinburg, March 2nd, Interfax-Ural. The General Investigation Department of the Main Office of Home Affairs of Sverdlovskaya Oblast has accomplished and passed on to the court the criminal case against two residents of Ekaterinburg committing fraud in the Internet. Valery Gorelykh, press-manager of the Main Office of Home Affairs of Sverdlovskaya Oblast, reported to the Intefax Agency that two residents of Ekaterinburg, an unmarried couple, put on the Internet site *Russian Girls* stealing a number of photos of girls who supposedly were looking for foreign husbands from other sites.

After a short correspondence *a fiance* invited one of the girls he had liked to visit him. A woman swindler wrote to a *fiance* on behalf of the girl saying she was penniless and couldn't afford the trip. The letter received, a *fiance* wired money for traveling expenses and clothes to a pseudofiancee.

In addition the above site had it that *fiances* could transfer money to the bank account of an Ekaterinburg based agency that will see that *fiancees* had all they needed.

The press-manager gave an example. One Canadian citizen who had sent money to the girl he had taken to, got a note saying his *fiancee* had fallen a victim to the Russian mafia and lost all her money.

Having received the note a loving Canadian packed his things and had flown off to Russia with the aim of meeting his *fiancee* hurt by rotters. On his arrival the Canadian reported the incident to Ekaterinburg based Consulate General of Great Britain and the regional police.

The General Investgation Department of the Main Agency of Home Affairs of Sverdlovskaya Oblast filed a lawsuit under the criminal article no 159 (ferocious fraud) stipulating 10-year imprisonment. Vladimir Vorotnikov who runs the Main Office of Home Affairs of Sverdlovskaya Oblast requested that the Interpol professionals and the regional policemen specializing in handling computer crimes be involved.

The rotters whose names aren't disclosed in the interests of investigation, were tracked down and arrested. Currently they are waiting for the court verdict to be announced.

Russian scammers are men posing as women

Online marriage fraud.

By cheating gullible foreigners hoping to marry Russian females, a man from Chelyabinsk became rich (his earnings were estimated up to $800,000). The inventive 30-year old man from Chelyabinsk found the way to get some dollars from foreigners. No violence, people will be glad to give their money, and minimum risk: the victims live far from Russia, and they are unlikely to call the law enforcers in the Russian province.

"I live in Chelyabinsk - the city with a cold climate and bandits wandering around the streets. Russia is such a frightening country that I would be eager to come to you as a virgin and give birth to babies from you", wrote the mysterious "girl" from Chelyabinsk to dozens of e-mail addresses picked up in the Internet. There were different signatures of real women (the swindler"s friends or relatives). However, he did not post their real photos, but selected the pictures of the most beautiful Russian women from the Internet.

The swindler was smart, but too greedy, and his greediness let him down. He was writing too much - to 3,000 foreign men simultaneously.

The swindler"s message hit the target: men abroad responded to the desperate e-mail of the chaste Russian beauty. Long sentimental exchange of letters followed. Foreigners sent gifts to the girls" mail addresses, and the price of gifts grew as the long-awaited meeting was approaching. To meet the men, the girl asked them for money: first to repair the computer, then to purchase air tickets and pay for visa. Soon $500-1000 was received in Russia via Western Union. This was the end of the love story of the foreigner and the Russian girl. New e-mail messages were breaking hearts of new single men abroad.

This option of making money was working for 2 years. The swindler explained to the girls whose addresses he was using, that he was working on a new Internet software and received money and gifts as his salary. The girls trusted him, and in addition the man gave them 1,500-2,000 roubles per month for their receiving money orders and parcels for him. The swindler became rich, he purchased 3 vehicles and built a luxury house.

All of a sudden, in June 2001 a cheated Australian fiancé sent online message to the website of President Putin. The Australian asked the authorities to check if the girl paid taxes from her income, he did not know that there was big-scale fraud under the letters of "the woman from Chelyabinsk who mislead me about marriage during our correspondence". The President Administration passed the e-mail message to the police.

The swindler was not scared of the policemen coming to his place. He claimed his actions had not been a crime.

The policemen confiscated computer, hard currency, jewelry, perfume, toys, collection coins, video- and audiocassettes from the man. His computer database contained information on simultaneous correspondence with 3,000 men! The swindler did not write everybody, those who showed themselves either greedy or smart were not honored with his letters any more. All the rest donated money to him. He had sponsors from Canada, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Australia, New Zealand and other countries all over the world. There were no men from the former USSR - the swindler was concerned that they could have reached him easily.

When the police was investigating the complaint of the Australian, a British timidly posted on the website of Chelyabinsk governor that he had been deprived of more than 1000 pound sterling in the same way.
Russian police had to write many letters abroad, and 9 foreign men agreed to testify against the swindler. According to Russian Criminal Code, he can be imprisoned from 5 to 10 years and have his property confiscated.

The swindler did not say he was sorry, and refused to return the money to foreign men. He probably considered himself a financial genius because he had started playing at international stock exchange online. His Swiss bank account allowed this, and also to become a fiance himself and find a daughter of a millionaire as his bride.

Russian bride scam

As Gary Oldenkamp tells the story of being caught in a scam to bring a Russian woman to this country, he reveals strong feelings of betrayal.“Not only was I taken advantage of by the woman I hoped to spend the rest of my life with, but local officials decided to take her side, even after I gave them proof of what was happening.”

Oldenkamp’s story of exploitation began innocently in 2002, when he decided to enroll in an online dating service.The Hull resident was 38 years-of-age at the time, divorced for one year and interested in dating again. He was contacted by a woman named Elana, who lived in Russia, was a year older than him, also divorced and she had a daughter. Elana worked as an English translator so language was not a barrier.

The two corresponded for six months by email and phone before Oldenkamp flew to Moscow to meet her.

“Initially, I wasn’t interested in meeting women from other counties,” said Oldenkamp.“But as the relationship progressed I began to think of all the advantages. There wouldn’t be an ex-husband around to deal with and no in-law problems. I thought it was a situation I could control. Plus, I believed that Russian women were soft, docile and calm. Boy was I wrong.”

According to the American University Trade and Environment database website, the majority of men who participate in services for Russian brides are white, educated, around 37 years old, and are ideologically conservative. These men are tired of ‘career-obsessed women’ and see Russian women as less materialistic and more appreciative of men. Russian women are seen as more feminine and more traditional.

Oldenkamp spent a week in Moscow in January 2003, and before he left, asked Elana to marry him.

“She told me everything I wanted to hear.She was very charming, soft and pretty,” he said.“Spending time with her was fun, much better than the usual dating. She was everything I was looking for. And her daughter was very quiet and respectful. Looking back, she told me everything I wanted to hear.”

Oldenkamp returned to Hull and began working on the paperwork to bring Elana and her 13 year-old daughter, Sasha, to the United States. She finally arrived in Hull in March of 2004 with a six month visa.

They were married on March 20, 2004 in Oldenkamp’s home. Afterwards they traveled to Omaha so Elana and Sasha could begin the two-year process of getting a Green Card, or permanent residence in the United States. According to the U.S. Immigration Service, the process of completing and submitting a request for a Green Card through marriage to a U.S. citizen can be both costly and confusing.

But Elana had a back-up plan.

“The first six months of the marriage went pretty well,” said Oldenkamp.“We agreed that she should take a year to settle in before she found a job. We disagreed when I wouldn’t hire a maid for her.”

But then the relationship started to fray a little. Elana had a car and a driver’s license but demanded that Oldenkamp come home from work each morning to drive Sasha to school, which was only a few blocks away.“Elana just didn’t want to get out of bed to do it,” he explained.

“She also wanted to take big trips and a huge allowance for clothes.”

The following March, when Elana had been in the country for one year, Oldenkamp reminded her of their agreement that she should find a job. While she refused to look for a job, instead she forgot Gary’s birthday and their first anniversary.“That hurt,” he recalled.

In June Elana got a job at the Marshall Field’s store in Sioux Falls, but soon was tired of the long drive and asked Oldenkamp to pay for an apartment in Sioux Falls so she could live there during the week.

“I overlooked a lot during the first year,” he recalled.“But by then she had dropped the act of being the loving wife and I realized she had told me a lot of lies. She only wanted someone who could give her unlimited amounts of money.”

“I realized I’d made a big mistake and was already thinking about ending the marriage.”

The couple’s arguments about money continued throughout the summer.

On September 14, she again demanded an apartment in Sioux Falls and Oldenkamp told her to move, but he wasn’t going to help her. She claimed that he had promised her more money, and in a rage jumped on him and tried choking him.“She wasn’t really hurting me,” he said. But she was out of control, and my son from my first marriage was staying with me that evening and I was concerned for him.I tried to call 911, but she started hitting the phone out of my hands, kicking and scratching me.”

Oldenkamp and his son finally got outside to the car, locked the doors and called for help.

“Then Elana came running outside screaming, help me,” he recalled.“I thought it was some kind of a joke, so I rolled down the window and told her she’d get more attention if she ran over to the Casey’s Store. And that’s what she did.”

A Sioux County deputy first responded to Oldenkamp’s home and as he was talking to Gary, the deputy got a call about a woman calling for help from Casey’s.

And then Oldenkamp’s nightmare began. Elana claimed that he had abused her. She had scratches on her neck, which he found out later Sasha had inflicted, so her mother would be ‘more believable’.

Oldenkamp and Elana both made statements to Deputy Oostra, but Elana didn’t mention any choking incident in her statement. Later Oldenkamp was charged with choking Elana and Oldenkamp was sure the deputy prompted her to make that accusation.

“I thought it was so obvious that she was making the whole thing up,” stated Oldenkamp.“Why would I call for help if I was abusing her?But the deputy said someone had to be arrested, so I spent the night in jail.”

“To understand this incident you have to know about the Violence Against Women Act of 1996,” said Oldenkamp.“There is a little piece in it that states if an immigrant is abused by her husband or other family member, and can prove the abuse, then they become admitted for permanent residence. Elana was going to get her green card with or without me.”

Elana was taken to the Family Crisis Center and two days later she was taken to Des Moines to stay with a cousin, Alex, also a Russian immigrant.

Two months later, Oldenkamp received a surprise call from Alex, who wanted to help him.

“Soon after arriving in Des Moines, Elana proudly confessed how easily she had convinced everyone of the abuse,” said Oldenkamp.“By this time she’d contacted the Iowa Coalition against sexual assault and abuse and claimed that he’d sexually abused her and verbally sexually abused Sasha. Her plan was to sue me for a large monetary settlement. Plus if she could get me on the assault charges, her green card was guaranteed.”

The cousin also explained that Elana was looking for a rich, lavish lifestyle in the United States, but living in Hull with Gary wasn’t what she hoped for.

Fortunately for Oldenkamp, Alex was having the same problems with Elana and Sasha. They wanted to be pampered but didn’t want to contribute anything to the household.

According to Oldenkamp, Alex obtained a court order to kick Elana out of her home. Now she wanted to tell the truth about Elana.

Back in Sioux County, Oldenkamp had been charged with serious sexual assault, which is a felony.

But he and his lawyer began building the case of Elana’s deception.

Alex also told Oldenkamp that Elana had left her diary in Hull and he needed to find it. The diary was written in Russian, which Oldenkamp had translated and described her plans to deceive him by any means possible to find the wealthy lifestyle she was looking for.

His trial was set for May 9, 2006.“County Attorney Melissa O’Rourke told my lawyer that she set the date so far into the future because she hoped by then Elana would be on a plane back to Russia,” said Oldenkamp.“We showed her the evidence and I think she knew this charge had no merit but she didn’t want to back down.”

Last January, Oldenkamp’s lawyer was offered a plea bargain from Sioux County.“They would drop the charge of abuse to a simple misdemeanor,” he said.“But I would still be saying I was guilty of abusing her, which was a lie. Plus, Elana would still get her green card and I’d have to spend six months in anger management classes. That really made me angry.”

“I think O’Rourke just wanted to look good to the voters in an election year,” he added.“My lawyer and I were certain we had enough evidence to win the case, so I turned down the plea bargain. I started thinking maybe the state should prosecute O’Rourke.”

Coincidentally, Fox News was doing stories on immigrant bride scams near the time of Oldenkamp’s trial. He discovered a support group of men who’d gone through the same problems with their Russian brides.Someone from that network gave his name to Fox News and they contacted him about covering his abuse trial.

Oldenkamp advised Fox News to contact the county about coverage.“The very next day my lawyer got a call from the attorney’s office saying they’d reduced the charge to interruption of a 911 call,” said Oldenkamp.“They just wanted to get rid of this case.”

His lawyer explained that the charge was similar to a speeding ticket; Oldenkamp wouldn’t have to take anger management classes and Elana would not receive her green card.He advised Oldenkamp to plead guilty to the charge.

So, two weeks ago he walked into the Sioux County courtroom and plead guilty.

“It was a lie,” he stated.“I didn’t interrupt any 911 call, but this whole incident has been about lies.“It started with a lie, was perpetuated by lies and ended with me telling a lie to make it go away.”

“I don’t feel like this county is my friend anymore.The sheriff’s department didn’t believe me. The Family Crisis Center wouldn’t even look at evidence of the scam and the county attorney’s office just played politics,” said Oldenkamp.“I’ve lived here my whole life, I go to work at a legitimate business, pay taxes and contribute to local causes. I keep wondering why they would treat me this way.”

He said Elana is still in Des Moines trying to get her green card.“As far as Elana is concerned, I feel like a gullible, stupid sap. But I’d never hurt anyone.I do plan to submit evidence to the authorities to keep Elana from staying in the U.S. though.”

The couple was divorced earlier this year.

The President of Russia - Putin ordered to arrest Internet scam artists after receiving letter from Australian man.

An Australian man, Terry was scammed by a group of internet scammers from Russia. Unlike many other men, Terry not only sent a warning to others but wanted to do more and so continued tracking down the criminals determined to have them prosecuted. He launched a webpage with information on the scammers to collect reports from other victims. In the next step he found and contacted the Russian Embassy in Australia, numerous Russian based newspapers and then various Russian government agencies, including the much feared Russian Tax Police, sending them the scam details. Later he found the official website for Russian government and used it to sent a letter to President Putin about these offenders, not expecting his complaint to ever reach the eyes of the President himself. In his letter to the President Terry implied that it was a matter of Russian honor that these criminals be brought to justice, as they were bringing great discredit on their people and country.

Unbelievably, the letter got into the right hands, the President himself , who ordered the criminals be tracked down.

Some months later Terry was surprised to receive Emails from the Russian Police and Interpol asking for details of the scam. Later he was contacted by and questioned by the State and Federal Police in Australia on behalf of Russian investigators, soon the criminals were caught. Terry was one of only 10 men who came forward to testify in the criminal case but it was his letter that made President Putin order an investigation. Terry did not know that it was his letter to the President that initiated the investigation until he was contacted and informed of it by a journalist for Sydney's Sunday Herald, who had received the details from Moscow after the criminals had been arrested.

The scammer gang Terry encountered was started by a husband and a wife, Yuri and Anna Lazarev, Russian citizens. They used photos of Anna to lure men, and female acquaintances to collect wire transfers. At first they used the real name of the wife (Anna Lazareva) to collect money but then moved into using names of other females to receive wire transfers from all over the world. Other aliases were Alfia Magdeeva, Marina Chumachenko, Vasilisa Schelkonogova, Anna Porfireva, Olga Trophimova, and many others.

34-year-old Yuri Lazarev made a set of photos of his wife Anna and was posting them at large Internet personals. Scammers then initiated correspondence with men pretending to be a single Russian girl looking for a serious relationship. The plot was a 27-year old virgin who wanted to wait until she finds the right man. She would soon fall in love with her correspondent and ask him for money for visa and tickets to join the man in his country. After receiving money, the gang would stop correspondence.

Later Lazarev made photos of other women and used them to post on the Internet. The women were unaware their photos were used in a scam.

The gang was contacting hundreds men a day and used major personals websites with their huge databases to solicit correspondence with the male members.

It is believed that the gang, based in Chelyabinsk, Russia, were some of the first dating scammers that used Internet personals to rip off men seeking serious relationship and marriage with Russian women.

According to Chelyabinsk police, the group scammed more than 1,500 men and extorted more than 1,5 million US Dollars from them, in the period of 2000-2002. The spokesperson for Chelyabinsk police said if it was not for Terry's letter to the President Putin, they could continue scamming men through Internet personals.
Recently the story hit pages of newspapers all over the world, starting from the publication in Sydney's Herald.

A telephone interview with Terry was published in the Sunday issue along with details they received from Moscow, and initiated another wave of talks about Internet marriage scams in Australia.

But according to Terry, that was not the whole story.

One could expect that after being scammed Terry would give up on Internet dating and particularly Russian women; quite the opposite. He continued his search and is currently involved with a Ukrainian girl. Terry continues to have a very high opinion of Russian women and Russians in general, and opposes often applied media stereotypes of Russian women on the Internet, being only gold-diggers and scammers etc.

And those are Terry's words that ended the article in Sydney's Sun Herald:
"There are hundreds of Russian scammers on the internet but there are hundreds of thousands of Russian women, along with millions of women from other countries, with honest intentions and the usual dreams."

Rakovsky digests this with a grimace, for him it is more proof of the corrupting influence of the West, which he also holds partly responsible for the invention of the detested "metrosexual".

No, a Real Man in Russia is only three things: he is good in bed, he has emotion and he has money.

As long as he has these three things he doesn't even have to be attractive or sober.

Rakovsky is sober but less attractive in real life than he is on his website, which does a good job of obscuring his striking paunch.

Sign up for one of his $200 (€145) six-part "Stervologiya" courses (the word derives from the Russian for "*censored*"), says the website, and you can become "a strong, successful self-confident woman; a player who can skilfully manipulate a man".

She gets what she wants by "creating a whole system with which to play with a man" and making comments such as: "I have a big bum, do you want to touch it?"

Rakovsky is sympathetic but firm: "Russian women are psychologically repressed because of their history. The traditional Soviet understanding of a woman's role is that she should take the lead.

"Women have been told that to get something they have to try a lot. What I teach is a little bit different.,He asks the women to draw up on paper a plan of how to attract a rich man, to begin a relationship and make it serious.

One woman suggests joining a deep-sea diving club. Another suggests her local bar. Rakovsky is unimpressed by their lack of vision: "If you want a real man you have to have a real strategy. I'll give you an example of a genius plan," he says.

"A woman decides to open a VIP club and sends invitations to only rich, attractive men. On opening night she is the sole woman there. This is a plan with strategic realisation.,Irina, a 28-year-old, turned to Stervologiya after she was dumped for the first time in her life. It has, she says, given her confidence and, in Rakovsky's words, helped her to "identify her prey".

Tonight her enormous cleavage threatens to break loose from her low-cut frilly top.

In the corner, Ivgenia (23) Vladimir's wife, stands in a short black dress, casting her connoisseur's gaze over the assembled stragglers.

A survey commissioned by Clinique revealed the common and diverse ideals of beauty held by women in different places. .

WHAT do women want? Or, what are they even thinking, you ask? It’s easy to assume what’s on their minds. But, as they say, that would be making an ass out of you and me.

Take for instance women in the United States. It would be easy to assume that Americans would name telegenic celebrities like Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Lopez as the standard-bearer of beauty.

Instead, at least half of them think that Oprah Winfrey, often called America’s most influential woman, is the person who best represents the ideal of beauty.

Jennifer Aniston came in second (31%). Jolie only scored third placing, with 28%.

In fact, American women are the most jaded when it comes to seeing Hollywood stars and models in beauty ads.

This was the unexpected outcome of a 12-country survey, which polled 9,800 women between the ages of 16 and 59, from June to October last year.

“From Milan to Malaysia, women follow many of the same trends,” Clinique Global Communications, which commissioned the survey, concluded in a statement. “And yet, there is still something unique and special about how each one of us approaches the concept of beauty.”

The survey was solely to learn about women and beauty. “This was not about Clinique or its products. In fact, as this was a blind poll conducted by an independent research firm, the participants did not know that it was commissioned by us.”

The findings were released in New York on Jan 25.

It found that most Indians (84%) and Russians (80%) rated women from their own country as the most beautiful in the world.

British women do not see themselves as the prettiest, according to the findings.

Still, there is a somewhat universal agreement on beauty. “Women in India, Italy, Russia and the United States are considered among the most beautiful in the world.”

The survey also found that Russian women (77%) care most about whether men like their looks. Maybe the Russians are the most honest in answering this question!

More than half of the women surveyed agreed that it is important that men find their looks appealing.

Are women willing to go under the knife?

The Koreans are the champions here. At least half of them have had, or would consider, cosmetic surgery. On the other hand, only 3% of Indian women are keen.

Good skin is a priceless commodity in the Land of the Rising Sun, where 40% of women feel that money is no object if the skincare product is effective.

Chinese women apparently do not feel pressured to look more beautiful. The Koreans (poor them) say they feel the most pressure. This surely explains the high number of them seeking out plastic surgeons.

The Chinese, Koreans and Indians think that women with thick make-up are cringeworthy.

Women in Mexico (43%) feel that not enough importance is placed on outward appearance. (Are they mad?)

By the way, Indian women washed their faces most frequently. Half of them would clean up at least twice a day and most of them would just use a bath soap to do the job.

Which is the beauty product that women can’t live without?

Again, it depends on whom you’re asking. Fragrance ranks high for those in Mexico, Spain and South Africa. Japanese women won’t leave home without using the sun block while mascara is essential in Germany and Italy. Almost all Koreans and Japanese women use sunscreen products, unlike the South Africans (40%) and Indians (31%) who scorn them.

One near-universal finding was unsurprising. Wrinkles and lines are often the biggest skincare concern of women everywhere.

The exceptions are those from China and South Korea who are more worried about blemishes and acne while the enemy in Japan is the age spot.

Russian schoolgirl's diaries tell of cruel life under Stalin

A 13-year-old schoolgirl who kept a poignant and ultimately tragic diary about her life growing up in Stalin's Soviet Union has been hailed as Russia's answer to Anne Frank.

The diaries of teenager Nina Lugovskaya, called I Want to Live: The Diaries of a Young Girl in Stalin's Russia, will be published in English on Friday after lying in a KGB file for 50 years.

They offer an unusually perceptive view of the Soviet Union in the 1930s, combined with intimate soul-searching about the kind of everyday difficulties faced by teenage girls everywhere: boys, parties and parents.

Like Anne Frank, Nina was 13 when she began keeping her diary; and like the Amsterdam schoolgirl she was writing in the shadow of one of the 20th century's most repressive regimes.

In 1937, at the height of Stalin's purges, her family's Moscow flat was raided and her diaries, which covered the years 1932-37, were confiscated by the secret police.

Nina's father, a left-wing socialist revolutionary, had already incurred the Kremlin's wrath and spent time in prison and in exile. But her negative feelings about Stalin's government, feelings that she expressed in the diaries, were to be the undoing of the rest of the family.

Together with her mother and two sisters, Nina was found guilty of treason and branded a counter-revolutionary. They spent five years of hard labour in the Siberian gulag, followed by seven years of internal exile.

It was an ordeal that the young diarist's mother did not survive. But Nina did: after Stalin's death she was politically rehabilitated. She married and became an artist, and lived long enough to see the fall of Communism. She died in 1993 at the age of 74.

The diaries were unearthed in 2001 by Irina Osipova, a researcher for Memorial, an organisation that tries to keep alive the memory of Stalin's victims. They had lain forgotten, scrawled in childish handwriting on the pages of three school exercise books, in a KGB archive in Moscow.

Russian women keen to snare their very own oligarch and live wealthily ever after have been thrown a lifeline with the publication of a female gold-diggers' manual telling them how to get their man.

The tongue-in-cheek tome, entitled "Married to a Millionaire or Marriage of a Higher Sort," has been penned by the country's brashest It girl and a well known society novelist specialising in lifting the lid on the lives of Russia's super rich.

Though the book is written in a light-hearted style, it is designed to appeal to millions of young girls looking for their 'Prince Charming' in a country where the gap between the haves and have-nots is staggering and growing wider by the day.

"There are enough oligarchs in Russia to go round!" its back-cover screams. "Your equipment: a smile, a sense of humour, optimism and fervour. Marry a Prince? It's easy."

The manual, which begins by wishing its readers 'Happy Hunting!," has been written by endlessly self-promoting socialite Ksenia Sobchak, a self-styled Russian Paris Hilton figure, and Oksana Robsky, who has made a name for herself writing semi-autobiographical accounts of her rich friends and wealthy ex-husbands.

The book comes with a large health warning, reflecting the fact that many marriages to oligarchs apparently end in bitter divorces.

In fact the glamorous duo begins by urging readers to assume at the outset that if they do manage to marry an oligarch (and they admit that the odds are not in your favour) the chances are that the union will end in divorce.

Better, they say grimly and perhaps with a nod to Irina Abramovich, to start planning for life after marriage on the wedding day itself.

Accumulating as much expensive jewellery at your husband's expense is one of their tips as is starting up your own business while the marriage is still intact -- using your husband's money of course.

"If you're dreaming of great love an oligarch is the last person you need," the manual advises. "You need an oligarch if you're dreaming of money, big money." In fact if you're what they call "a good girl," and want to live happily and comfortably, they suggest marrying a man from the 'up middle class' whom they suggest has fewer psychological flaws than an oligarch but whose wallet can be just as accommodating.

The two authoresses, who are pictured on the front cover in risque evening dresses toting machine guns, go on to compare oligarchs to wild animals likening them, according to their personality, to different species from bears to bucks.

They reveal various ruses how to get your oligarch to buy you expensive presents such as pretending you have lost your luggage for weekends away by bribing airline staff to orchestrate its temporary disappearance.

Any oligarch worth his borscht will immediately offer to buy you a new wardrobe, they claim.

Ironically, when it comes to living happily ever after, the authors admit that their credentials are mixed since Ms Robsky has been thrice unhappily married while Ms Sobchak has never been married.

THE old Bhai Bhai (brothers) slogan that underscored India's relations with the erstwhile Soviet Union is long passé. But the "brothers" could now become brothers-in-law.

No, this is not a romantic, crazy idea. It has actually been mooted in Moscow. The traditional Indian blessing, "may you be mother of a 100 children", can be showered on Russian brides. And eligible, enterprising Indians can multiply their earnings, and keep them within their new families in Russia.

Maria Arbatova, a Russian feminist, has proposed this radical solution to her country's falling birth rate: importing Indian bridegrooms for Russian girls. A writer and TV moderator, Arbatova, who married an Indian businessman a few years ago "after 25 years of keeping marrying Russians", thinks Indian men make ideal husbands.

"They are crazy about their family and children," she said in presenting her new book Tasting India in Moscow. "What is more, Indians, like Russians, are Indo-Europeans, and many Sanskrit and Russian words have the same roots," she said. She may have a point here. Most Indian languages belong to what is called the Indo-German family of which Russian is a member.

For reasons I am not clear about, my hospital records after each annual check-up register me as "Caucasian". My Russian friends are thrilled to bits when I tell them I could be their lost-and-found cousin.

Although the Indians' proven record at making babies is next to China's, the idea to import only the Indian bridegrooms to Russia is essentially to counter the other Bhai - the Chinese. Quoted in The Hindu newspaper, Arbatova thinks Indian bridegrooms can help ward off "a Chinese demographic invasion in Russia".

She warns: "If we do not balance off the Chinese with Indians, Africans or aliens, by 2050, China will annex Russia's Siberia up to the Ural Mountains."

Serious stuff! This means that eligible Indians do not have a cakewalk and will have to face tough competition in these days of free market enterprise, to which both India (relatively) and Russia (completely) are recent converts.

Fair enough. But Indians are ahead in many large countries with small populations like Canada and Australia. This is because they work and do not live off their wives. They are among the more prosperous communities in the West. So, Russian brides can look forward to a combination of spiritual and material happiness.

And they do have a longer tradition. Arjuna, the valiant character in Mahabharata, married comely princesses during each of his adventures in far-off lands. Records show many Indian soldiers fighting in the two World Wars bringing home foreign brides.

Marrying girls from the erstwhile Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc was not uncommon for Indian comrades. For some, the "Bolshevik hospitality" - being received at the border and dropped back there at the end of the visit - meant returning with a bride. Some stayed back.

Brajesh Singh, an Indian nobleman and communist, married Svetlana Alliluyeva, Stalin's daughter, her third marriage, in 1964. When he died, she came to India to immerse his ashes in 1967. Alas, there is nothing official about it. It is highly unlikely that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will discuss it with President Vladimir Putin during their annual winter get-together, this time in Moscow. Summits are reserved for mundane things like trade and industry, defence and security, science and technology and information and culture. And maybe, nuclear deals.

Pity there will be no room for "soft" subjects. Putin, who once said, "I am India's greatest friend", will soon be stepping down. But since there seems some meeting of minds and hearts, this proposal should gain momentum post-Putin as well, under a new president. And Putin is being asked if he will run for the presidency again in 2012. Even if he doesn't, with Maria Arbatova as the cheerleader, many Indians would be ready to say Da to Russian brides.
